This tool is general information for families and students. It is not a screening or diagnostic tool, does not give individual advice, and is not a substitute for an assessment by a registered speech-language pathologist. The word list is a prompt to help you count, not a standardized vocabulary inventory. If you are worried about your child's communication, Ontario families can self-refer to their local Preschool Speech and Language Program at no cost.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a word?
Any sound your child uses consistently and on purpose to mean the same thing: "ba" for ball counts, so do animal sounds like "moo", signs, and words in any language. Imitations that are never used spontaneously do not count.
My toddler understands much more than they say. Is that normal?
Yes. Understanding runs ahead of talking at every age. A child who understands well but says little is a late talker with a better outlook than one who also struggles to understand. Both are worth monitoring.
We speak two languages at home. How do I count?
Count every word in every language, and count a word known in both languages once. Bilingual toddlers have vocabularies similar to monolingual toddlers when both languages are combined.
When is a low count a concern?
Common referral triggers are no words at 18 months, and fewer than 50 words or no two-word combinations at 24 months. In Ontario, families can self-refer to the free Preschool Speech and Language Program without waiting for a doctor.
